It’s easy to label a backpack journalist as “a jack of all trades, a master of none.” It’s also naïve. Convergence journalism is the direction the news industry is heading. Multimedia reporting brings a new avenue for storytelling, one that can package audio, video, and photography with plain text. An obvious advancement for the industry, journalists should encourage this development.
Backpack journalism provides an opportunity to do journalism differently. It allows its reporters to become more versatile and its subjects to be covered more entirely. No one form of media offers a panoramic view of its subjects, but a converged media comes close. And, isn’t that the point? To improve how news is told, no matter if it is a single backpack journalist doing so.
