Reporting – Day 1

Today was my first day as a reporter for ColumbiaMissourian.com. Tom Warhover, executive editor, told our J4450 News Reporting class to jump in with both feet at orientation Sunday. I think I did.

I attended the first of many budget meetings this morning. I’m thankful that professor Warhover kept introducing the editors. I’m learning. I had the first of many beat meetings, as well. I’m going to focus on half of downtown for the Neighborhoods beat, roughly from 10th Street to Boone Hospital/Elm Street to Rogers Street including Stephens College. I’m starting to build up my contact list for this beat. I have a few people/businesses in mind that I worked with last year for J2100. Now, it’s just a matter of calling them up and introducing myselft again!

My fellow beat reporter was assigned a story about The Today Show coming to Stephens College’s Searcy Hall, which reopened in May and allows residents to bring pet dogs. I was able to get the phone number of the hall coordinator, but we’re having trouble getting a hold of her or anyone really. Welcome to reporting, I guess.
