COLUMBIA – An 11-year-old boy was struck while riding a bicycle through a crosswalk on Thursday afternoon, and police were searching for a vehicle that left the scene at West Worley Street and Park de Ville Drive.
Columbia police, in a news release, said officers were looking for a charcoal-colored Nissan Altima driven by a white male between 50 and 60 years old.
The child was taken to University Hospital for an injury on his lower left leg, according to police. The hit-and-run occurred at 5:17 p.m. Thursday; an officer arrived at 5:21 p.m.

I wrote this during my second general assignment shift at the Columbia Missourian. I had kind of a slow start. I was chasing stories all morning and not coming up with anything. This story, though, was my first breaking news story.
When I was handed the police report, I flashed back to my J2100 News class last fall. But, this time it was not a classroom exercise. The news had actually happened. I had to remember to be careful with my words and not read into the police report. My job was to report the facts I knew and only that.
