COLUMBIA – A la Campagne will say au revoir to Columbia by early December.
The home furnishing store located at 918 E Broadway is closing after about 14 years in business.
“We’re all kind of bittersweet about closing,” co-owner Nina Furstenau said. “We feel like we’re part of the community here.”
The store’s co-owners, Courtney Bramon, Carol Staten and Furstenau, chose to close in light of difficult economic conditions and other, more personal reasons.
“The lease was coming up, and we had to make a decision,” Furstenau said. “The other owners and I wanted to pursue other things. Closing gives us a chance to do so.”
When the three friends from Fayette opened the store, each brought her own interests – Bramon for retail and art, Furstenau for antiques and handmade crafts.
“We combined these visions for the store,” Furstenau said.
A la Campagne will begin holding a going-out-of-business sale Thursday. The store, which recently stocked up on products, sells antiques, art and other gifts for home decor.
“We’re here until it’s gone,” Furstenau said.
She estimates the store will remain open for another six weeks.
The owners do not know what business will replace the Broadway retail space when they leave.
I was assigned this story at 5 p.m. last night. I wasn’t able to call any sources until this afternoon. It was a quick story. I like the detail about the owners being friends from Fayette. Also, I was again reminded of the importance of accuracy checks. I nearly misspelled the last name of one of the owners.
